My interest in cathedrals probably derives originally from being taken to a
number of them when I was young. Later, as a graduate student at Cambridge,
I started visiting them to sing services with my
college chapel choir when the usual choir was away. After doing five in one
year, I was smitten, and decided I would try to sing in all English Church
of England Cathedrals. (I also enjoy singing in Roman Catholic Cathedrals,
and in Scotland and Wales, but the opportunities to do so have been fewer
and I wanted to keep my ambitions within bounds!) I manage one or two new
ones a year; I've covered all in the South and the North
West, but have some way to go with the Midlands and the North East.
